Abstract
520,589. Electric glow discharge furnaces. BERGHAUS, B. Oct. 26, 1938, No. 30934. Convention date, Jan. 25. [Class 39 (iii)] [Also in Group XL] In an electrical annealing or melting furnace heated by a glow discharge the material to be heated is electrically insulated with respect to the cathode. The wall 2 and floor 1 of the oven are connected as the cathode and are watercooled. The anode 15 is introduced through the member 1 and is insulated therefrom by an insulating disc 22 and a ring gap too narrow to permit of a glow discharge therein. Through the anode 15, and insulated therefrom by a ring gap, passes a water-cooled rod 16 which supports the material to be heated on a quartz plate 20 having a screening pin 19. An inert gas, or another gas when chemical action is desirable, is supplied through an insulated pipe 10, and a similar pipe 9 connects a vacuum pump. The apparatus is operated at a voltage of 500 to 7,000 volts, and at a gas pressure of 10 to 0À05 mm. The wall 2 of the oven is perferably metallic but may be a semi-conductor, e.g., graphite, and a viewing window 8 is provided therein. The material to be heated may not be insulated from the anode and may itself form the anode. Direct voltage is preferably employed, but alternating voltage may be used when the introduced anode is small compared with the cathode, when a rectifying effect is produced.
