Abstract

522,356. Electric glow discharge furnaces. BERGHAUS, B. Dec. 6, 1938, Nos. 35495, 35496. [Convention dates, Dec. 24, 1937], 35497, 35498. 35499, and 35500, [Convention dates, March 22, 1938]. [Class 39 (iii)] Cathode disintegration apparatus, vacuum electric discharge annealing and melting furnaces, and vacuum electric discharge apparatus for effecting chemical reactions, are provided with means for preventing discharge in the gas inlet and outlet. In Fig. 1, the whole of the internal surface of the vessel 1 is coated with the material 4 to be disintegrated. A vacuum pump is connected at 5 and a neutral or reducing gas may be introduced at 6. A cooling jacket 7 is provided. The cover is electrically connected to the vessel 1 by a wire 11. Articles 13 to be coated are suspended in a frame 14. A metal screening sleeve 20 is held between insulating rings 17, 18 positive voltage being applied at 23. The sleeve may support an anode plate 24. Glow discharge in the inlet and ' outlet passages is prevented by sieves 6a, 5a, having a mesh less than 1 mm. Fig. 3; not shown, illustrates the application to an annealing and melting furnace, and Fig. 4, not shown, the application to a similar apparatus for carrying out chemical reactions, the frame 14 supporting a catalyst. Instead of providing a sieve in the gas inlet and outlet pipes, the pipe 9, Fig. 7, is insulated from the surrounding sleeve 35 by an insulating ring 11. The gap 36 is too narrow to allow a glow discharge therein. The anode may be similarly separated from the vessel and from the central negative or insulated support by a narrow gap.
