Furnace details.-To check escape of hot gas, an electrode, Fig. 1, is closely surrounded by a sleeve A which rests on an annular seating C free to slide in any direction on the furnace casing or on an interposed part such as a watercooled box D. The sleeve may be of metal, preferably ribbed, or of refractory material having good thermal conductivity, for instance a mixture of fire-clay and graphite. The contiguous surfaces of the sleeve and seating may be rounded to facilitate slight rocking of the sleeve. On the upper flanged end of the sleeve may rest a ring of segments G drawn closely together magnetically and preferably rounded at the surfaces touching the electrode. As shown in Fig. 4, the adjacent edges of the segments may be curved, and their median lines may be radial or non-radial The edges may be stepped so as to overlap slightly. Laminated segments may be used if necessary. For large electrodes, which are liable to wasting at joints between consecutive pieces, several superposed circles of segments G<1> - - G<4>, having slightly different internal diameter and staggered joints, may be provided. A flanged ring H, Fig. 1, may be placed over the segments to exclude dust. A small opening in the roof may be covered by a light plate to relieve pressure within the furnace.
