Abstract
127,458. Rondelli, T. Aug. 10, 1918. Resistance furnaces.-A furnace in which the heating-receptacle serves as the resistance is provided with at least one recessed terminal block of large size and small resistance to reduce heat losses and protect the connexions; material of higher resistance is placed between the crucible and block. In one form of furnace, a carbon or graphite crucible 1, Fig. 1, rests on a block 2 of similar material. A layer 3 of fine carbon, lamellar graphite, or the like is interposed between the crucible and the block to protect the crucible and regulate the resistance. The block 2 is surrounded bv a watercooled ring 4<1> conveying current, and is supported by a refractory base 5 partly fitting within it. A water-cooled connecting-ring 4 also surrounds the mouth of the crucible, which is closed by a massive stopper 7. Amorphous graphite or other reducing-material of low conductivity is filled into the space 9 between the crucible and outer walls 8, and into a space 6 between the terminal block and base. A modified furnace has a terminal block of larger use and smaller thickness. Another furnace has the base-piece 5 domeshaped and is mounted on trunnions; flexible conductors press contact-pieces against the watercooled rings. Fig. 3 shows a furnace chamber formed by placing two crucibles 1, 1<1> horizontally with their rims in contact.
