Electrode furnaces.-In an arc furnace, leakage of molten material along the conductors from a conducting hearth is checked by carrying the conductors upwards and enclosing them to points above the level of the molten material. As shown, the conductors 7 extending from beneath the hearth are embedded in a non-conducting envelope 2 surrounding the hearth. They may issue from the furnace above the level of the charge, or may be carried downwards again before leaving the furnace.
