Abstract

120,786. Grammont, E. Nov. 28, 1917. Electrode furnaces, particularly for melting and refining copper or alloys thereof. A conductive hearth consists of a metal plate a, a conducting layer d, and an upper layer of non-conducting material b in which are wells b<1> affording connexion between the charge and the conducting layer. The more rapid heating in the wells promotes circulation of the charge. As shown, the hearth electrode a has webs a<1> for attachment of conductors. It may be water-cooled, and may be insulated by asbestos. The layer d may consist of a mixture of coal and pitch or tar, and connexion with the plate may be improved by asperities, nipples, recesses, or dove-tail grooves on the latter. The layer b may consist of refractory brickwork.
