Abstract

14,858. Bingham, C. June 26. Furnace details.-The bottom 'electrode of a furnace, such as a calcium-carbide furnace, is formed with holes c extending from the upper surface to a space round one or more conductors, and molten metal, preferably copper, is poured into the holes to form cores and to make contact with the conductors. In the form shown, the electrode consists of several blocks b of carbon or other refractory material, and the vertical holes c communicate with passages in which metal tubes d of smaller diameter are secured by nuts and flanges. The tubes d and the electrodes are bedded in broken carbon e or the like, and may be water-cooled ; or the tubes may be replaced by rods. In a modification, the electrode may be mounted in a metal holder having an extension coupled to the bus-bars, and the holder may be provided with inclined sides to make a secure connexion when the molten metal is poured in.
