Abstract

The lower part of the furnace forms a bath for metal refining. This bath has a hearth with an electrode. The wall above the hearth has more electrodes below the burners. The hearth is loaded with granular coke which serves as a means for closing the electric circuit between the two sets of electrodes. Furnaces of this kind can be arranged in cascade for progressive refining. Effective removal of impurities is achieved to give a high quality product.
