Be it known that I, ARTHUR JONES, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at the city of Belleville, county of St. Clair, State of Illinois, have invented a certain new and useful Burner Structure for Furnaces, of which the following is such a full, clear, and exact description as will enable anyone skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification.
My invention relates to a burner structure for furnaces and particularly to improvements in that form of structure shown and described in my prior application, Serial No. 591,804, filed October 2, 1922.
One object of the present invention'is to so construct the device that the blocks'of refractory material of which it is composed will not only be more easily and cheaply manufactured, but will also vbe so shaped and proportioned as to better withstand the extremely high temperature to which they are subjected during the operation of the furnace. Another object of my invention is to provide a sliding connection between the furnace and burner structure to obviate the necessity of moving one of such parts toward and away from the other to connect and disconnect them.
In the accompanying drawings, which illustrate one form of burner structure made in accordance with my invention, Figure 1 is a ,vertical central section; Figure 2;is a View showing the details of the central or pipe junction block; Figure 3 is a view showing the details of the end block of the connector; Figure 4 is a view showing the details of the inner burner sleeve; Figure 5 isa View showing the details of a section of pipe protecting collar; Figure 6 is a View showing the details of the outer burner sleeve; and Fig ure 7 is a section taken on the line 7-7 I of Figure 1.

The casing 11 of the burner structure is preferably rectangular and formed of brick work so as to produce a chimney-like structure through which passes the air supply pipe 12. Surroundingthe cross connector 18 isa pipe junction block 19 of refractory material such as fire clay. Thisbloc'k is com posed of eight similar parts adapted to fit around the pipes and connector "and to" be held together by the engagement of the "ta-- pered bosses 120 with other parts to "be described. Arranged above the block 19 and surroundingthepipe 12 is a pipe =protecting collar21', shown in detail in Figure 5. The collar is composed of two'parts each provided with interlocking lugs22 and 23 so as to hold the parts firmly together when inposition on the pipe. Formed in-oneend ofthe collar 21 is a tapered recess .24 adapted to; receive one'of'the bosses 2O for engagement'with the recess of a second section of collar. While I have shownbut orie section of collar 21 in the drawings, it may be found necessary to use two or more sections to. protect thepipe 12 from the heat of the escaping products of combustion. Arranged around the pipes 13.and .16 are collars 21 similar in all respects to the collar 2,1 eXcept that theboss 25 is omitted. Thecollar 21 surrounding the pipe 13 is supportedon a plate '26 built into the casingll and-provided-with a central opening for the pas-. sage of the ipip'e'13. As it is dilficult, if not impossible, to so construct the partsas' to'in-'- sure the collars 21 bearing properly on the plate 26, a space is left between said parts which is filled by a'shim 27 of the'proper thickness. j p
The forwardly projectingportion 15'of the burner pipe is covered by an inner burner sleeve divided longitudinally into twoparts 28 and 29. The part28 isdivided'into four sectors each provided with a rib 30, and the part '29 is similarly divided and provided with ribs 31. These ribs 30 and 31 serve to space the outer burner sleeve from the inner sleeve to form flues 32 (Fig ure for? the passage of the productsv of combustionfrom the furnace to the space withinthe casing 11. Formed in one end of the member 28 is a recess 33 adapted to receive one of the bosses 2O on the blockfl19 and this function, togetherwith the collars 21 and 21 to hold the parts' of' said block together. Formed onthe' oth'er end of the member 28 is a boss 34 engaging with a corresponding recess in the part 29. As
shown in Figure 6 the outer burner sleeve comprises two parts 35 and 36 each preferably formedof six sectors and held together by a metal ring 37 abutting at one end against a flange 38 on the part 36, while the other end is provided with a flange 39 bolted to a plate 40 carried on the casingll.
The ring 37 forms a bearing for the sl1d ing annular connectorv extending between the burner structure and the furnace 10. This connector comprises a shell and a lining. The shell 41 is provided at one end with a flange 42 adapted to engage the end of the furnace, and at the other end with aflange 43 adapted to bear on the ring 37, oneof said flanges being removable to allow of the insertion of the lining. Such lining consists of two annular parts 44 and 45 each preferably formed of six sectors and the part 44 being recessed at 46 (Figure 3) to receive the flange 42. It will be evidenced that by sliding the connector longitudinally on the ring 37 the burner structure may be engaged with or disengaged from the furnace. 7
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is:
1. In a device of the class described, the
combination with a flue structure, of a cen-' ter block therein composed of separable parts, a pipe connection surrounded by said center block, a. burner extending from said connection, and a covering for said burner, said covering being arranged to allow the return of gases to the flue structure.
2. In a device of the class described, the combination with a flue, structure, of a center block therein composed of separable parts, a pipe connection surrounded by said center block, a burner extending from said connection, a sleeve surrounding said burner and composed of separable parts, and a second sleeve surrounding said first named sleeve and separated therefrom to form a gas return passage.
' 3. In a device of the class described, the combination with a burner structure, of a center block therein composed of separable parts, a pipe connection surrounded by said center block, a burner extending from said connection, a sleeve surrounding said burner and composed of separable parts,'a second sleeve surrounding said first named sleeve and separated therefrom to form a gas return passage, said second named sleeve being also composed of separable parts, and a member surrounding said second named sleeve and holding the parts thereof together.
4. In a device of the class described, the combination with a burner structure, of a center block therein composed of separable parts, a pipe connection surrounded by said center block, a burner extending from said connection, a sleeve surrounding said burner and composed of separable parts, a second sleeve surrounding said first named sleeve and separated therefrom to form a gas return passage, said second named sleeve being also composed of separable parts, and a member surrounding said second named sleeve and holding the parts thereof together, said member being secured to the wall of the flue structure.
5. In a device of the class described, the combination with a flue structure, of a center block therein composed of separable parts and provided with a plurality of bosses, and pipe protecting members engaging with said bosses to hold the parts of said center block together.

Ina device of the class described, the combination with a flue structure, of a center block therein composed of separable parts and provided with a plurality of bosses, a pipe connection in said center block, pipe extending from said connection, and pipe protecting members each composed of interlocking parts, said members surrounding the pipes and engaging with said bosses to hold the parts of the center block together.

In a device of the class described, the combination with a flue structure, of a pipe connection therein, a burner extending forwardly from said pipe connection, a covering of refractory material for said connection and burner, a portion of said covering projecting beyond the flue structure and being provided with a return passage for conducting gases to the flue structure, and a furnace connector sliding on said projecting portion.

In a device of the class described, the combination with a flue structure, of-a pipe connection therein, a burner extending forwardly from said pipe connection, a covering of refractory material for said'connection and burner, a portion of said covering projecting beyond the flue structure and being provided with a return passage for conducting gases to the flue structure, and a furnace connector sliding on said projecting portion, said connector comprising a shell and a refractory lining composed of a plurality of parts.

In a device of the class described, the combination with a burner structure, of a pipe connection therein, a burner extending from said connection, a sleeve surrounding said burner and composed of separable parts, a second sleeve surrounding said first 12 named sleeve and separated therefrom to form a gas return passage, said second named sleeve being also composed of separable parts, a member surrounding said second named sleeve and holding the parts thereof together, and a furnace connector slidingly mounted on said member.

In a device of the class described, the combination With a burner structure, of a pipe connection therein, a burner extending from said connection, a sleeve surrounding said burner and composed of separable parts, a second sleeve surrounding said first named sleeve and separated therefrom to form a gas return passage, said second named sleeve being also composed of separable parts, a member surrounding said second named sleeve and holding the parts thereof together, and a furnace connector slidingly mounted on said member, said connector comprising a shell and a refractory lining composed of a plurality of parts.
11. In a device of the class described, the
combination with a flue structure, of a cenfor block therein composed of separable parts and provided With a plurality of bosses, a pipe connection surrounded by said block, pipe protecting members engaging With said bosses to hold the parts of said block together, a burner extending from said connection, a sleeve surrounding said burner and composed of separable parts, a second sleeve surrounding said first named sleeve and separated therefrom to form a return passage, a membersurrounding said second named sleeve and holding the parts thereof together, and a furnace connector slidingly mounted on said member.
