Abstract
648,607. Making compound electrodes. METROPOLITAN-VICKERS ELECTRICAL CO., Ltd. Feb. 11, 1948, No. 4034. Convention date, Jan. 18, 1947. [Class 83 (ii)] [Also in Group XL (a)] The target electrode, which consists of tungsten or other refractory metal and forms part of the wall of an X-ray tube, is joined to a plate of wrought copper through an intermediate layer of fused copper to reduce diffusion. A high-frequency induction heater 7, Fig. 2, surrounding a graphite holder 6, is used to fuse the wrought copper block 4 to the tungsten or tantalum target 5, preferably in a reducing atmosphere such as hydrogen, which may be mixed with nitrogen. The metals are compressed during heating and the target, with the required thickness of copper, is subsequently cut off from the main block.
