Abstract

485,356. Uniting metal to ceramic material by heat. BRITISH THOMSONHOUSTON CO., Ltd. Oct. 8, 1937, No. 27397. Convention date, Oct. 13, 1936. [Class 36] A method of producing a vacuum-tight connection between metal and a ceramic material consists in alloying with the basic metal another metal or metals capable of entering into chemical combination with the ceramic surface and then fusing the metal on to the ceramic material. The basic metal may consist of silver, copper, or aluminium, which are combined with a few per cent of silicon, manganese, tin, lithium, or phosphorus. A silver-manganese or silver-silicon alloy are used for melting on to a porcelain body when the operations are performed in an oxidizing atmosphere. A reducing - atmosphere or a vacuum furnace are preferably employed when the metal is fused to magnesium-silicates, e.g. steatite or similar materials which release oxygen when heated up.
