729,921. Modifying metallic surfaces; cleaning and annealing tungsten. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd. Jan. 6, 1953 [Feb. 14, 1952], No. 3963/52. Classes 72 and 82 (2). To reduce brittleness in tungsten wire to be used as a cathode in an,electric discharge device, the wire W, primarily wound on a molybdenum mandrel, is passed through a chamber C in which its surface is oxidized by heating it to 900‹ C. by means of coal gas and excess air, then through a furnace D in which it is heated to 1350‹ C. in an atmosphere of humidified hydrogen, and then through an extension E of the furnace D through which hydrogen passes to cool the wire and prevent its re-oxidation. The molybdenum mandrel is then dissolved out in a mixture of acids.
