Abstract

451,989. Thermionic cathodes. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO., Ltd., Magnet House, Kingsway, London.-(Patent - Treuhand-Ges. fur Elektrische Gl³hlampen; 11, Ehrenbergstrasse, Berlin) July 22, 1935, No. 20774. [Class 39 (i)] A cathode is made by filling a tungsten helix 2 with a paste of material having high emissivity, and then heating the paste to convert it into a hard coherent mass. The paste is formed by sintering a mixture of alkali oxides or carbonates and tungsten powder and then grinding the mass thus produced to fine powder ; alcohol is used to form the paste 5 which is placed in the helix. Heating is in a neutral or reducing atmosphere at a temperature of at least 1700‹ C. Current is passed through the helix during the forming process after the cathode has been mounted in a lamp ; the cathode may be heated by the discharge or independently.
