Abstract

641,807. Metal-vapour discharge apparatus. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO., Ltd., and CLACK, B. N. July 17, 1947, No. 19137. [Class 39 (i)] Mercury vapour is liberated in a discharge lamp by heating previously introduced mercuric oxide. The oxide does not decompose at the normal baking temperature of.about 400‹ C., but only at a subsequent stage of intense local heating to 800-1000‹ C. by eddy-currents or positive ion bombardment. The mercuric oxide may be enclosed in a metal box, or caused to adhere to an electrode or other support by a binder, such as potassium silicate or phosphoric acid. Specification 370,925 and U.S.A. Specification 1,855,901 are referred to. The Provisional Specification also refers to the liberation of mercury from compounds other than mercuric oxide, and the introduction of metals other than mercury, by the abovedescribed method.
