Abstract
542,886. Electrolytic refining of aluminium BIRMINGHAM ALUMINIUM CASTING (1903) CO., Ltd., PRITCHARD, P., and TAYLOR, G. O. Oct. 7, 1940, No. 14930. [Class 41 ] In an electrolytic cell for refining aluminium by the three-layer process, a chamber n containing layers of impure aluminium electrolyte and pure aluminium is enclosed by a refractory lining m of magnesite or other suitable tapered blocks spaced from an outer casing a lined with refractory blocks b to form an annular space in which is arranged a coil s of copper or other suitable metal for the circulation of cooling liquid. Aluminium or aluminium alloy is cast in the space surrounding the coil to form a cooling mass behind the lining m. The coil may be replaced by vertical U-shape pipes connected at their upper ends to form a continuous passage for cooling liquid. In a modification, hollow semi-circular members w, Fig. 3, of aluminium or aluminium alloy having lugs x by which two such members are clamped together may be provided around the lining. A tapping groove and spout o at the top of the furnace serves to remove pure aluminium and a spout p serves to draw off the impure aluminium at the base.
