Abstract

545,458. Magnesium. INTERNATIONAL ALLOYS, Ltd., and PRYTHERCH, W. E. May 2, 1941, No. 5711. [Class 82 (i)] The residue consisting mainly of alumina, iron, and silicon, resulting from the reduction of magnesiferous material by means of aluminiumiron-silicon is treated in an arc furnace with coal or coke and fluxes or other additions to regenerate aluminium-iron-silicon for reuse as reducing agent. Losses of aluminium, may be made up by the addition of bauxite, clay, aluminium scrap or other aluminous material, or by aluminium oxide obtained from bauxite or clay by the process described in Specification 545,000, [Group III]. Magnesium oxide to be reduced may be briquetted with the reducing agent and a binder and if desired a material such as calcium fluoride and baked for 3 hours at 250-500‹C., distillation being effected at 1100- 1250‹C., under a pressure of preferably less than 5 mm. of mercury.
