Abstract

A compacted refractory material which may be set in the form of bricks, blocks or concrete, for use in lining vessels for liquid aluminium, comprises calcium aluminates, and/or barium aluminate and/or magnesium aluminates and contains, in the absence of any substantial amount of carbon, above zero and below 1% of a compound, e.g. silica or iron oxide, reducible by molten aluminium, aluminium alloys, or metals of less reducing power than aluminium or aluminium alloys, e.g. copper, lead, tin or zinc or alloys thereof, each aluminate of said product having the oxide of Ca, Ba or Mg combined with the stoichiometric amount of Al2O3 and not being attachable or wettable by any of said metals or their alloys. The refractory products may be raw or fired, dense or porous, and may be used to line furnaces, electrolytic vats or electrolysis cells. Porous products may be obtained by the use of sawdust, crushed coke, milled fruit kernels, naphthalene, or expanded synthetic resins, e.g. expanded polystyrene.
