Abstract
A refractory bottom lining for alumina reduction cells and aluminium melting furnaces comprises a high melting point mixture of a refractory oxide, e.g. alumina (Bayer process), magnesia, titania, zirconia, silica, beryllia, and a cryolite X3AIF6 where X is sodium, potassium, lithium, rubidium or caesium. Some excess of either XF or AIF3 being permissible. The refractory mixture may contain from 20 to 75%, preferably 40 to 75% alumina and may include a binder, e.g. calcium aluminate. In preparing the cell lining a molten solution of the alumina in the cryolite is prepared, e.g. at 1350 DEG C., and this may be cast, but is preferably cooled, granulated and pulverised, e.g. 70% to pan 60 mesh, and tamped into place in the cell; alternatively a loose powdered mixture of alumina and cryolite may be tamped directly into the cell and the latter placed in operation to sinter the mixture in place. Either the granula or loose powder may be moulded into a refractory body of the desired shape. Reduction cells incorporating alumina/cryolite linings are described and when aged these p linings may be crushed and re-used.
