[Class 82 (i)] [Also in Group III] Metallic magnesium is produced in a cyclic process according to the following equations:- MgO+CaCl 2 +MgCl 2 +CO 2 =CaCO 3 +2 MgCl 2 .. (1) MgF 2 +CaC 2 =Mg+CaF 2 +2C ..... (2) CaF 2 +2 MgCl 2 = MgF 2 + CaCl 2 + MgCl 2 ..... (3) The magnesium chloride of reaction (3) .may be substituted by the nitrate or other magnesium salt, the radical of which does not produce an insoluble precipitate with calcium ions. Reaction (1) may occur at 80‹C., the substances being stirred whilst carbon dioxide gas is passed therethrough. Reaction (2) may be effected by intimately mixing the constituents and putting them into a reducing furnace heated to 950‹C., for one hour at 3 to 5 mms. Hg. pressure, the impurities in the calcium fluoride residue being separated, before use in reaction (3), by treating with dilute hydrochloric acid and filtering. The magnesia for reaction (1) may be obtained from magnesite or dolomite by roasting &c.
