Abstract

686,845. Titanium alloys; coating with titanium and titanium alloys. TITANGES. Feb. 14, 1950 [Feb. 15, 1949; Feb. 15, 1949; Feb. 19, 1949], No. 3791/50. Classes 82(i) and 82(ii) In a process for the manufacture of titanium alloys a titanium halide is reduced with an alkaline earth metal or a mixture of alkaline earth' metals, the reducing metal being in a divided state and in the solid condition. As shown, an evacuated reaction tube 1 containing magnesium chips 2 is fed with titanium tetrachloride from a vessel 3. On ignition of the magnesium, the titanium tetrachloride is reduced and magnesium titanide (Mg 2 Ti) and magnesium chloride are formed, the latter being collected in the liquid state in a receiver 6. When other alkaline earth metals, i.e. Ca, Ba, Sr, Be, are used the titanides formed have the general formula (alkaline earth metal) 2 Ti. The magnesium titanide may be distilled to recover the titanium or may be mixed with a metal of higher boiling point than magnesium and distilled to remove the magnesium and produce an alloy of titanium and the added metal, e.g. Cu, Al, Fe, Co, Ni and V. Articles of metal or ceramic may be coated with titanium by heating with the magnesium titanide, or by coating the article with an alkaline earth metal, reducing a titanium halide by the alkaline earth metal, and then decomposing the magnesium titanide formed by heat to produce a coating of titanium. The coating may be hardened by heating in the presence of one or more of carbon, oxygen, or nitrogen.
