Abstract

1,268,812. Producing aluminium alloys. ANGLO METALLURGICAL Ltd. June 9, 1970 [April 23, 1969] , No. 20645/69. Headings C7A and C7D. An aluminium base alloy comprising by weight 0À1-13% B and a total of 1-20% Ti, Zr and/or Cr, the balance being Al and impurity, e.g. 0À23- 0À32% Fe and 0À11-0À21% Si, is produced by reducing with molten Al an alkali metal fluoborate e.g. KBF 4 and one or more of alkali metal fluotitanate, fluozirconate and fluochromate, e.g. K 2 TiF 6 , K 2 ZrF 6 and/or K 2 CrF 6 , wherein only part of the total Ti, Zr and/or Cr content of the resultant alloy is derived by reduction of the corresponding double fluoride; part of the total Ti, Zr and/or Cr content is preferably derived from the presence of finely divided Ti, Zr and/or Cr or an Al alloy thereof in the reaction mixture. The mixture of double fluorides and finely divided metal or alloy chosen may be added to the surface of an Al melt superheated e.g. to 870-1, 000‹C. in an induction furnace. The alloy of the invention may be treated with NaOH solution to dissolve the Al leaving powdered borides of Ti, Zr or Cr.
