Abstract

Carbides of tungsten, molybdenum vanadium, titanium, tantalum, niobium, chromium or boron are prepared by heating an ore thereof containing the element in oxide form with at least one of the reducing agents, aluminium, silicon, calcium and magnesium in the presence of sufficient carbon to carburize the element to be obtained as carbide, the reaction being carried out without the aid of heat other than that provided by the exothermic reaction. The ore may contain, or may have added to it, iron, nickel or cobalt. Small quantities (up to 1 per cent) of vanadium, aluminium (if not already present) or cerium mixed metal may also be added. In a modification, a further heat-supplying addition such as potassium perchlorate may also be made. Iron, nickel and cobalt may be dissolved from the metallic carbide regulus, for example by hydrochloric acid, to yield pure carbides. Specification 687,946 is referred to.ALSO:Carbides of tungsten, molybdenum, vanadium, titanium, tantalum, niobium, chromium or boron are prepared by heating an ore thereof containing the element in oxide form with at least one of the reducing agents, aluminium, silicon, calcium and magnesium in the presence of sufficient carbon to carburize the element to be obtained as carbide, the reaction being carried out without the aid of heat other than that provided by the exothermic reaction. In a modification a further heat-supplying addition such as potassium perchlorate may also be made. The carbide regulus obtained may be treated with hydrochloric acid for example, to dissolve undesired metals and the resulting carbide or carbides employed for the production of hard metal. Specification 687,946, [Group III], is referred to.
