Abstract

Sintered hard metal materials having a final carbide phase containing tungsten carbide, titanium carbide and tantalum carbide are produced by a process in which primary mixed crystals of titanium carbide and tantalum carbide are first formed and the tungsten carbide is subsequently added, the primary mixed crystals of titanium-tantalum carbides being produced by heating powdered mixtures of titanium carbide and ferro-tantalum and carbon, or equivalently, technical tantalum and carbon, with or without nickel or other metal of the iron group and, after extraction from said primary mixed crystals of excess iron and other impurities by chemical treatment, for instance with hydrochloric acid, mixing said primary mixed crystals in powdered form with tungsten carbide, or equivalently tungsten and carbon, to form therewith the final carbide phase, the resultant powdered metal being annealed, pressed and sintered in known fashion. The titanium carbide may be substituted at least in part by zirconium carbide or hafnium carbide and at least part of the tantalum carbide may be substituted by one or more of the carbides of niobium, vanadium, chromium and molybdenum, which carbides may be formed from the corresponding nitrides or oxides during the formation of the primary mixed crystal.
