Abstract

Pure metallic borides or mixtures of metallic borides of the group of metals comprising titanium, vanadium, chromium, zirconium, niobium, molybdenum, hafnium, tantalum and tungsten are produced by heating the oxide or oxides of the group with carbon and boron carbide to at least the metathesis temperature of boron carbide to metal boride and carbon monoxide and in an atmosphere of carbon monoxide, preferably at a pressure of no greater than one atmosphere. The proportions are chosen so that the boron carbide is completely decomposed and substantially no carbides are left. The reaction may be effected under substantial mechanical pressures of at least 500 lbs. to the square inch so as to produce shaped articles of borides and not granular material.ALSO:Mixtures of metallic borides of the group of metals comprising titanium, vanadium, chromium, zirconium, niobium, molybdenum, hafnium, tantalum and tungsten are produced by heating the oxides of the group with carbon and boron carbide to at least the metathesis temperature of boron carbide to metal boride and carbon monoxide and in an atmosphere of carbon monoxide, preferably at a pressure of no greater than one atmosphere. The proportions are chosen so that the boron carbide is completely decomposed and substantially no carbides are left. The reaction may be effected under substantial mechanical pressures of at least 500 lbs. to the square inch so as to produce shaped articles of borides and not granular material. If the proportions are chosen to leave boron carbide behind after the complete decomposition of the oxide then mixtures of metal boride or metal borides and carbon boride are produced.
