1329345 Cubic boron nitride VSESOJUZNY NAUCHNO - ISSLEDOVATELSKY INSTITUT ABRAZIVOV I SHLIFOVANIA and MOSKOVSKY GOSUDARSTVENNY UNIVERSITET IMENI M V LOMONOSOVA 19 April 1971 [4 March 1970 12 Oct 1970] 27275/71 Heading C1A Cubic boron nitride is produced by subjecting hexagonal boron nitride to a temperature of at least 1500‹ C. and a pressure of 55 k.bar in the presence of an initiator comprising a boride, nitride, silicide or germanide of a transition metal of a Gp. IV, V, VI or VIII of the Periodic Table, or a mixture of two or more of these. Specified initiators include iron boride and silicide, titanium boride and nitride, chromium boride, nickel boride and nitride, zirconium, molybdenum and vanadium nitrides, cobalt germanide and a solid solution of chromium and iron borides. The reaction mixture suitably comprises 2-40% initiator and 60- 98% hexagonal boron nitride.
