Abstract

1,170,025. Bicycloheptane dimethylols. J. FALBE. 22 July, 1968, No.34924/68. Heading C2C. A process for the production of a mixture of 2,5- and 2,6-bicycloheptene dimethylol comprises hydroformylating a #<SP>5</SP>-bicycloheptene-2- aldehyde at a temperature in the range 80- 200‹ C. and at a pressure of at least 50 kg/sq. cm. gauge with a mixture of carbon monoxide and hydrogen in the presence of a rhodiumcontaining catalyst e.g. rhodium sesquioxide and hydrogenating the reaction product without separation of the catalyst and without the addition of other hydrogenation catalysts with a mixture of at least 180‹ C. and at a pressure of at least 200 kg/sq. cm. gauge. In practice a mixture of the exo, exo-2,6- and 2,5- and exo, endo - 2,6 - and 2,5 - dihydroxymethylbicyclo - 2,2,1 - heptanes is obtained.
