Abstract
1303910 Sintered cutting tool METALLWERK PLANSEE AG & CO 10 Aug 1971 [9 Sept 1970] 37432/71 Addition to 1217386 Heading C7F A cutting tool for machining specific steels has a machining surface formed of a layer 0À001-<0À01 mm. thick containing at least 75% of carbides, nitrides, carbo-nitrides and/or borides of Ti, Zr, Hf, V, Nb and/or Ta with the balance Fe, Co, Ni, Cr, Mo, W and/or WC. A 5Á thick layer of TiC is formed on a cemented carbide tool by packing the tool in under carbonized TiC (16%C) of 1 mm. size and treating with gaseous CCl 4 at 1100C. A 8 Á thick layer of TiN is formed on a cemented carbide tool by heating in H 2 to 1100 in a SiO 2 or Al 2 O 3 tube and treating with TiCl 4 and N 2 .
