Abstract

Substrates of ferrous, non ferrous, carbon or quartz are coated with a carbide of at least one of Ti, W, Zr, Hf, Ta, Nb, V, Th and Si by heating the substrate above 1050 degrees in a gas mixture containing H 2 and more than x% volume of a hydrocarbon and y % volume of a halide of one of the above elements where y is at least equal to 0À02%x and x varies linearly from 3% at 1050 C. to 0À5% at 1300 C. and maintained at 0À5% above 1300 C., Fig. 6. The specified substrates are W, WC, Mo and Nb based alloys, (Registered Trade Mark) "Inconel", plain carbon, tool and stainless steels, graphite and quartz. Steel substrates are heated to 1100-1250 C., graphite to 1200-1600 C. and quartz 1300-1325 C. As shown in Fig. 1 the substrate 88 is heated in reactor 10 connected to boiler 20 and purged with H 2 and A via line 82. Liquid TiCl 4 is fed into 20 via 24 and flowmeter 32 and H 2 and A via 36. After introduction of methane, deposition takes place 15-50 mils/hr. Ethane, propane, or benzene may replace methane. The coated products may be used for machine tool parts such as punches, dies, reamers, drills, end mills, cutting tools, wear pads for aircraft and motor brakes, dental burs and wear guides in textile, leather and synthetic fibre industries.
