Abstract
Magnesium sulphide or nitride is heated with aluminium in a reducing or inert atmosphere such as hydrogen or argon, with or without the addition of a flux such as one or more fluorides of magnesium, calcium, sodium, or aluminium, whereby aluminium sulphide or nitride is produced and magnesium distils off. The magnesium sulphide treated is other than that produced by the process described in Specification 465,366, and may be that produced by the process described in Specification 465,421. Specification 464,812 also is referred to.ALSO:Magnesium is obtained by heating powdered magnesium sulphide or nitride with aluminium in a reducing or inert atmosphere such as hydrogen or argon. A flux such as one or more fluorides of magnesium, calcium, sodium, or aluminium may be added. Aluminium sulphide or nitride is produced and the magnesium distills off. The magnesium sulphide treated is other than that produced by the process described in Specification 465,366, and may be that produced by the process described in Specification 465,421. Specification 464,812 also is referred to.
