Abstract
The mechanical and physical properties of gray cast iron containing not less than 2 1/2 per cent of carbon and 1 per cent of silicon are improved by treating the molten metal with not less than 0.4 per cent of one or more nitrates but not sufficient to alter substantially the composition of the iron with respect to carbon and silicon. Between 0.4 and 1.25 per cent of sodium, strontium, barium, calcium or copper nitrates may be used. The carbon in the cast iron should not be altered by more than .03 to .06 per cent nor the silicon by more than .06-.13 per cent.
