Abstract

Stainless steel containing Mn or Ni and C up to 0.02% is produced by vacuum treating a non-deoxidized steel melt, adding deoxidants and alloying elements and further vacuum treating the resultant melt. The first vacuum treatment may be for 10-25 minutes and the second for 2-8 minutes. The vacuum used is preferably better than 0.5mm Hg and the treatment may be effected in the melting furnace. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 964,702.
