Abstract

Magnesium aluminate, for use as a refractory or abrasive, in which the molecular ratio MgO/Al2O3 is greater than unity, e.g. 3 or 4, is produced by reacting in solution, say at 60-70 DEG C, water soluble magnesium salts, e.g. the chloride or magnesium-containing lyes obtained in the extraction of potassium salts, and water-soluble aluminates, e.g. the lyes from wet decomposition of bauxite or clay, heating the gel to 300-400 DEG C, washing, and firing, say in hydrogen, at 1000-1950 DEG C. Reference is also made to a temperature of 2100 DEG C.
