Abstract

Porous moulded articles of clay are produced by a process which comprises (1) the addition of known slip producing substances which do not considerably lower the surface tension of water such as alkali hydroxides, or salts of alkalies and weak acids, (2) the application of a known method to make the mass porous, (3) the addition of known stiffening agents such as an increased amount of the substances used in (1) or by the addition of special substances such as common salt, sodium sulphate, calcium or magnesium chloride, &c., (4) the shaping of the stiffened mass. Suitable methods of rendering the mass porous are (1) the addition of foam-producing agent followed by the injection of air; (2) the injection of air alone; (3) the generation of gas in the mass by chemical means, and (4) the addition of foam.
