Abstract

Alkali metal aluminate, together with hydrogen fluoride, is formed by heating a solid mixture which includes an alkaline earth metal fluoride, a source of an alkali metal monoxide and free and/or combined silica and alumina to a temperature of at least 1000 DEG C. in the presence of water vapour. The mix should contain sufficient alkaline earth metal fluoride to eliminate all silica as alkaline earth metal silicate. Preferably, the molar proportions of alkaline earth metal fluoride, alkali metal monoxide, silica and alumina are 2: 1: 1: 1, and the mix is heated to a temperature of from 1000 DEG C. to 1300 DEG C. for from 15 to 120 minutes. Highly siliceous materials containing alumina, for example bauxites, aluminous clays, kaolin and red mud waste from the Bayer process in bauxite reducing plants, and alkaline earth metal fluorides, for example fluorspars and by-product calcium fluoride from the defluorination of phosphate rock, may be used. To obtain the preferred molar proportions, siliceous material and a source of alkali metal monoxide, for example soda ash, may be added as required to the mix. From the resulting sinter, alkali metal aluminate may be leached out by known methods, and the aluminate solution may then react with the hydrogen fluoride, which may be recovered from the effluent combustion gases, to form cryolite.
