Abstract
Alunite, 3Al2O3.K2O.4SO3.6H2O is heated to 500-600 DEG C. until dehydration just ceases and treated with either Mg(OH)2 or NH4OH to form K2SO4 and either MgSO4 or (NH4)2SO4. The Mg(OH)2 may be formed in situ by the reaction of calcined magnesite with water. Aluminium hydroxide may be separated from the solution containing K2SO4, MgSO4 or (NH4)2SO4 which results from the treatment, in admixture with gangue, which may be removed by washing and drying, and the Al(OH)3 may be concentrated by using a gravity separation technique. Sodium aluminate may be produced from the aluminium hydroxide by reaction with NaOH solution. MgCl2 may be obtained from the solution containing reaction products, K2SO4 and MgSO4 by treatment with KCl. MgCO3 and (NH4)2SO4 may be produced from the MgSO4 obtained in the initial reaction by treatment with ammonia and carbon dioxide. MgSO4 and NH4OH may be obtained from (NH4)2SO4 produced in the initial reaction by heating the latter with Mg(OH)2. Salts may be separated from each other using fractional crystallization techniques.
