Abstract

a -CaSo4. 1/2 H2O is produced by treating by-product gypsum with a 7 1/2 -25% v/v aqueous solution of H2SO4 at boiling-point under substantiall atmospheric pressure, then separating and washing. Crystal habit modifiers, e.g. ferric or chromic sulphate, chloride, or nitrate, ferric ammonium sulphate, or chrome alum may be added in amounts up to 1% w/v of the acid. Seed crystals, e.g. as produced in a previous process, preferably ground to a surface area of 2150-3200 cm.2/gm., may also be added in amounts of 1-10% w/w of the gypsum. Acid and gypsum may be mixed cold then boiled, seed crystals being added just before boil; or the gypsum and product may be continuousoy or intermittently added to and removed from the boiling solution. The product may be filtered hot, washed with water at 80 DEG C., and dried at above 80 DEG C. It may be ground during and/or after washing or drying. The acid filtrate is concentrated and re-used.
