Abstract

Niobium is extracted from hydrofluoricnitric or hydrofluoric-sulphuric acid solutions of the starting material, e.g. ferroniobium, by washing the solution with tributyl phosphate, and subsequently back-washing the tributyl phosphate with water or a gaseous hydrofluoric acid. Preferred acid concentrations are IOM HF/4M HNO3 and IOM HF/6MH2SO4, the former being preferred for continuous extraction. After backwashing the tributyl phosphate the niobium may be precipitated as niobic acid by passing ammonia into the aqueous back-wash. The niobic acid may be dissolved in a mixture of potassium fluoride and hydrofluonic acid and potassium fluoniobiate; K2NbOF5.H2O crystallized out. If 0.5M HF solution is used to backwash, tantalum, which is extracted from the initial acid solution by the tributyl phosphate, is not washed out therefrom.
