Abstract

1,160,922. Slaking lime. DOW CHEMICAL CO. 19 Jan., 1967. No. 2955/67. Heading C1A. Calcined limestone and/or dolomite is slaked by immersing it in water, e.g. for 3-60 sees. and then allowing it to drain. Hydration occurs mainly while draining, during which time (e.g. 60 mins) steam is given off and the particles become heated to 100-150‹ C. and break down in size. Calcination may be effected at 1300-1450‹ C. on material of particle size 0À5- 2 ins. The calcined material preferably has a particle size of 90% greater than 0.84 mm. and is sufficiently porous to absorb 0À4-1À5 g. H 2 O per g. CaO. The product may be used to prepare Mg(OH) 2 from MgCl 2 brines.
