Abstract

698,151. Electrolytic production of titanium. IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES, Ltd. May 28, 1952 [Aug. 24, 1951], No. 19997/51. Class 41. Titanium is produced by electrolysis of a fused salt through which gaseous titanium tetrachloride and hydrogen are simultaneously passed. The fused salt may consist of the chloride or fluoride of an alkali metal, alkaline earth metal or magnesium or mixtures thereof, maintained at 800‹ C. The cathode may be of titanium and may be melted together with the deposit after electrolysis. If other metals are used as cathode, the deposit of titanium may be removed by scraping.
