Abstract

1,207,772. Alkali metal chloride electrolysis. FARBWERKE HOECHST A.G. March 17, 1969 [March 22, 1968], No.13869/69. Heading C7B. In the electrolysis of alkali metal chloride using a mercury cathode, the electrolyte is recycled through steps including adding alkali metal chloride to the electrolyte from the electrolysis cell and filtering the electrolyte, while alkaline, to remove impurities before returning the electrolyte to the cell, and as a further step an amount of hypochlorite is introduced into the electrolyte before the filtration such that the electrolyte still contains hypochlorite after the filtration. Preferably the amount of hypochlorite remaining after filtration is 3 to 10 grams per cubic metre. Hypochlorite may be added as a solution of alkali metal hypochlorite or by forming it in situ by reaction of chlorine with hydroxide ions.
