Abstract

1,257,934. Electrolysis of brine. HOOKER CHEMICAL CORP. July 3, 1969 [July 5, 1968], No.33685/69. Heading C7B. A brine containing 3À5-15% by weight of alkali metal chloride is electrolyzed in a diaphragm chlor-alkali cell at a temperature from 80‹ C. to the boiling point of the brine, the anode comprising a substrate of a) titanuim or an alloy thereof containing less than 10% by weight of aluminium, vanadium, chronium, palladium, tin or a mixture thereof, b) titanium-coated copper, c) tantalum, d) tantalum-coated copper, e) niobium or f) niobium-coated copper, the substrate having thereon an active surface comprising ruthenium, rhodium, palladium, iredium, platinum or a mixture thereof. The brine may also contain as impurities sulphate, phosphate, carbonate or nitrate ions or organic material. The chlorine, caustic alkali and hydrogen produced may be recovered. Before electrolysis the brine may be treated to remove calcium and magnesium by precipitating calcium as carbonate, adjusting the pH to near neutrality, raising the alkali metal chloride concentration to 5-15% and precipitating further calcium as carbonate and magnesium as hydroxide by adding alkaline solution containing carbonate ions.
