570,174. Electrolysis of magnesium chloride fusions. MATHIESON ALKALI WORKS. April 17, 1943, No. 6198. Convention date, April 17, 1942. [Class 41] In the electrolysis of magnesium chloride fusions to produce metallic magnesium and chlorine, hydrous magnesium chloride is introduced into the fused electrolyte in the vicinity of not more than a third of the anodes, for instance anode 5 only in the three anode cell illustrated, water vapour and hydrochloric acid resulting from the dehydration of the salt in the presence of the chlorine enclosed being withdrawn through an opening 11 in the bell 8 and collected, uncontaminated chlorine from the other anodes being independently withdrawn through openings 12, 13 in the bells 7 and 9.
