Abstract
840,162. Depositing titanium. NEW JERSEY ZINC CO. Nov. 20, 1958 [Dec. 17, 1957], No. 37398/58. Class 41. In the method of electrodepositing titanium on a cathode immersed in a molten mass of chloride salts composed essentially of (a) at least one titanium chloride in which the titanium has a valency less than four, and (b) a diluent salt mixture having a melting-point not substantially higher than 450‹ C. and comprising at least two of sodium chloride, potassium chloride and lithium chloride, the salt mixture has a composition within the area ABCDEFGA in the drawing, the cathode with its deposit of titanium and entrained molten salts is removed substantially directly into the ambient atmosphere while the molten salt mass is maintained at not more than 100‹ C. above its melting-point, and the deposit is thereafter separated from the cathode. Titanium may be introduced into the molten bath as the tetrachloride, or from a crude titanium anode, and is converted to lower chlorides in the bath. The deposit is preferably stripped from the cathode while the entrained salt is still molten.
