Abstract

757,042. Electrolytic refining of copper. CANADIAN COPPER REFINERS, Ltd. Feb. 10, 1954 [Dec. 1, 1953], No. 3962/54. Class 41. Copper is refined by passing a direct current between anodes of copper to be refined and cathodes of pure copper in a cell containing an electrolyte comprising an aqueous solution of sulphuric acid and copper sulphate to which is added 0.025 to 0.08 pounds of glue and 0.019 to 0.14 pounds of polyvinyl alcohol for each ton of copper deposited. Preferably the electrolyte is continuously circulated through the cell and 0.0019 to 0.006 pounds of glue and 0.0014 to 0.0116 pounds of polyvinyl alcohol are continuously added to each ton of electrolyte per day. The electrolyte in the cell contains 0.0012 to 0.0036 gms/litre of glue and 0.0008 to 0.0072 gms./litre of polyvinyl alcohol.
