Abstract
1,206,797. Electrolytic production of hydroquinone and p-benzoquinone. UNION CARBIDE CORP. Nov.9, 1967 [Nov.10, 1966; Feb.16, 1967], No.51120/67. Heading C7B. Phenol is electro-chemically oxidized to form p-benzoquinone in a divided cell or hydroquinone in an undivided cell by electrolysing an aqueous solution containing 0À5-4 wt % phenol and 1-5 wt % of an electrolyte at a temperature of 25-60 C., a plt of less than 4, and anode potential of at least +0À9 volts and a cathode potential more negative than +0À4 volts with reference to a saturated calomel electrode and an anode current density of at least 4 amps per sq. dm. until up to 80% of the phenol has been electrolyzed, and thereafter recovering the p-benzoquinone or hydroquinone from the aqueous solution. The anode used may be of lead, platinum, gold, graphite, manganese, chromium, iron or nickel; the cathode may be of lead; and the electrolyte may contain sulphate ions, e.g. as sulphuric acid or sodium sulphate. If used, the membrane may be of regenerated cellulose film. The cell may be operated continuously.
