Abstract

531,105. Nickel hydrate. DISTILLERS CO., Ltd., and FRANCON, J. July 11, 1939. No. 20213 [Class 41] Nickel hydrate for catalytic purposes is formed at the anode in the electrolysis of an alkali hydrate solution of 0.5 to 0.05 normal strength using nickel electrodes, preferably in the form of hollow cylinders, the cathode being enclosed in a porous cell. A voltage of 4 to 8 volts when the distance between the electrodes is 25 mm. and a current density of 0.004 to 0.01 amperes per sq. cm. are employed. 5 to 10 c.c.s of ethyl alcohol per litre may be added to the electrolyte. Up to 5 per cent. of the hydrates of one or more of the metals cobalt, copper, silver, lead, magnesium, iron, and zinc may be incorporated in the nickel hydrate paste by substituting at convenient stages electrodes of these metals, or hydrates prepared as described in Specification 519,874, [Group III], may be added thereto.
