Abstract

PURPOSE:To make the recoating work of deteriorated electrode parts extremely simple, and to obtain an electrolytic cell of low cell voltage and a long life by coating not only the electrode parts for performing hydrogen generation reaction but also all the parts in the cathode chamber with a cathode active material. CONSTITUTION:All of the inside of the cathode chamber including the electrode parts of an electrolytic cell of a known unipolar or bipolar filter press type are coated with the same cathode active material differing from the material in said cathode. As a result, the deteriorated cathode can be recoated without removing from the electrolytic cell, and the work is made extremely simple. For example, plating can be carried out by feeding a plating bath of the cathode active material while holding the electrode parts mounted in the cathode chamber of the electrolytic cell. Metallic elements such as Fe, Co, Ni, Ru, Rh, Os, Ir, Pt are generally used for the cathode active material and particularly Ni and its alloys are more preferable.
