Abstract
924,817. Electrolytic cells. RUHRCHEMIE A.G., and STEINKOHLEN - ELEKTRIZITAET A.G. March 15, 1960 [April 6, 1959], No. 9181/60. Class 41. An electrolytic cell for electrolysing an aqueous solution of an alkali metal chloride comprises an anode and a cathode separated by a porous diaphragm, the cathode being formed wholly or partly of a double skeleton material, i.e. one prepared by sintering a mixture of a powder of a carrier material and a powder of a Raney alloy and leaching out with alkali part at least, and preferably all, of the soluble component of the alloy to leave particles of Raney metal. The preparation of a double skeleton material is described in Specification 806,644. The mixture preferably comprises (per centages by weight) 35 to 65% carrier metal, e.g. Fe and/or Ni, and the alloy preferably comprises 40 to 60% of a metal of the iron group, e.g. Ni, and 60 to 40% of at least one metal of the group Al, Mg, Zn, and 1 to 20% of the iron group metal may be replaced by a Group VIII A metal, e.g. Pt. The double skeleton material may comprise a layer, e.g. 0.2 to 0.4 mm. thick, of comminuted material on a metal foil or metal gauze, or the comminuted material may be applied to multilayered metal gauze or a plate of metal fibres so that the material fills the pores of the base. The material is compacted and the soluble metal dissolved out after application.
