Abstract
921,136. Preparing silver oxide electrolytically. YARDNEY INTERNATIONAL CORPORATION. Sept. 8, 1959 [Sept. 8, 1958; Dec. 22, 1958], No. 30659/59. Class 41. Silver oxide is prepared in a pure and finely divided form electrolytically using a silver anode and an inert cathode in separate compartments, an electrolyte surrounding the anode consisting of an alkali metal salt forming soluble silver salts, e.g. sodium acetate or nitrate, whereby silver oxide is precipitated in the anode cell. The. stainless steel or other inert cathode 104 is surrounded by a porous cup 113 containing alkali hydroxide solution at a level about 1 cm. higher than the level of the alkali salt electrolyte to maintain a hydrostatic head, whereby anions are prevented from reaching the reducing zone in the cathode area. The anode cell 101 is separated from the cathode cell 102 by a porous diaphragm 110, and is provided with a sloping bottom 101a, and the silver oxide formed from the pure silver anodes 103 falls to the bottom and passes towards a valved outlet 112. The Ag 2 O is then washed and dried. It is in finely powdered form, 0.7 to 1.2 microns, and may be used for manufacture of silver electrodes, or as a source for making pure silver salts of organic or inorganic acids.
