Abstract

The hydrogen overvoltage of iron cathodes of electrolytic hydrogen generators is reduced by coating the iron with a noble metal or metals (Pt, Pd, Au, Os, Rh, Ir) by precipitation from an aqueous solution of the salts thereof containing less than 5 gm. and preferably only 0.1 to 0.5 gm. of the noble metal per litre. The deposition may be by ionic exchange; or alternatively, an alkaline solution of the salt of the noble metal may be added to the usual electrolyte so that there results less than 0.2 gm. of noble metal per litre of solution and the solution is then electrolyzed. Preferably a Pt-group metal and an Au are used; thus 10-30 per cent auric chloride may be added to Pt or Pd chloride in making the depositing solution. The method is said to be especially suitable for "pressure electrolyzers" decompressing water at more than 5, and particularly at 20 to 50, atmospheres.
